For
the first twelve years of Freya Catten's life, her mother kept her
hidden by raising her in the deepest wilderness – teaching her to
survive and live off the land away from civilization – warning her
of the dangers of getting involved with society or leaving traces of
her DNA behind to be discovered. But five years ago Freya's mother
disappeared, leaving her alone, and was never heard from again.
Now
seventeen years old and starving for a normal life, Freya slips into
a community and even though she doesn't believe her mother's
delusional stories of the Bifrost, she still lives as if she does –
fearing computers, cameras, and government surveillance.
Then their
are the Takers who have kidnapped almost three-hundred people and no
one knows who they are or what they want – but Freya holds a dark
suspicion – that the Takers are really after her and that they are
closing in. Freya realizes if she is to ever have a normal life she
must find her mother and answer the questions that have kept her in
hiding – a quest that will bring her through present day Kentucky,
Mississippi, New Orleans, Sweden and beyond to a universe she would
never have believe existed.
Along the way, Freya reluctantly teams up
with Theron Hawk – a handsome, scarred, and intriguing teenage
soldier from a war torn country. But as secrets are uncovered and she
comes closer to solving the mysteries surrounding her life, blood,
and the priceless necklace that lays around her throat, the scars of
the Bifrost will threaten to rip apart Freya's very existence.
